Branding Concerns for cannabis Packaging

Cannabis is a growing industry. With more states legalizing cannabis, both recreationally and medically, lots of companies are jumping in, providing people with tis product.

With it however, there are also different packaging needs, especially branding, that needs to be properly factored in. since it is not legalized on a federal level, there are concerns that are in place with this. not to mention, it is unavailable for those under the age of 21.

Here, we’ll go over some of the different regulations and requirements that need to be in place when planning cannabis packaging, and how to have a good design for your packaging.

The Regulations

Obviously cannabis is a product that’s allowed in certain areas, by certain groups of people. You have to be 21 and over to purchase it in the US.

With that said, the packaging does need to have that information on there, and to keep it out of reach of children. The same goes for how the packaging is childproofed.   You need to make sure that kids cannot open the packaging and get in there, for everyone’s sake.

Another regulation that needs to be in place is the content. You need to make sure that you have all of the information about the product on it. Sometimes with usage they put it on there, but the makeup, including terpenes, the CBD and CBN content, and even how much of the product is psychoactive is important.

Many companies focus on this first, because this is the first piece of information they must have on their products.

With regulatory compliance, it’s important to do your research, and ensure that you have all the safety factors in place. Look at state laws, and make sure that the packaging fits the compliance for the legislature regarding this.

Branding and Design for This

Now, you obviously need compliance, but that doesn’t mean that your branding has to suffer.

What you should do is offer some fun, unique elements that differentiate you. a label that conveys the type of product that you have, and the different compliance that comes with this, definitely plays a role of sorts.

You should make sure that the packaging showcases your product well, and really taps into what the audience wants. In the same vein, make sure to have all of the information there.

For more natural packaging, you can have different boxes that are hard for kids to open.   For flower jars, you can make the top of it lock.

There are also concerns of sustainability with this.   if you’re a cannabis provider, you might want to also factor in the natural element of such. to do this, try to go for more biodegradable paper, and also, try as well to have natural packaging. Recycled paper and even bioplastics will also work well for this.

The benefits and Challenges

You want to brand your product well so that it differs from the others in the industry. Remember, the competition is quite strong, so you want to make sure that you stand out. You also want to make sure that product safety is at the forefront, so you’re not struggling with that either.

However, there are challenges that come with this. These include balancing the costs and the complexity of regulations.   These can take time and cost some money, so make sure you’ve set aside your budget.

Keep abreast of the recent changes too, so that you’re able to properly adapt the packaging that you need, in order to ensure success and tap into all of the markets you wish to work in.
